favourite faces for favourite mythic ladies: Thisbe with Charlotte Casiraghi
Thisbe knows this: that she loves Pyramus.
Thisbe knows other things as well: she knows that this love is forbidden by their rivalling families; that there is a crack in the wall between their houses where they can whisper their devotion to each other; that they have arranged to meet in secret far from their homes.
But she doesn’t know that when she arrives there will be a lioness with a bloodied mouth that will frighten her away. She doesn’t know that when she flees she’ll drop her veil, and that the lion will maul it and leave it bloody. She doesn’t know that Pyramus will arrive to see it and believe his love has been killed by wild beasts.
Thisbe cannot know that Pyramus will fall upon his sword in despair, hopeless for the loss of her. Just as she can’t know that when she returns there and finds him dead she will weep and scream and tear her hair and then, finally, end her own life with that same sword.
Wrapping her veil around herself, Thisbe sneaks out of her house to meet Pyramus, and soon she will know all these things.
