favourite faces for favourite mythic ladies: Leucothea with Roxane Mesquida

Queen Ino of Thebes took the child-god Dionysus into her heart, her own dear nephew discarded by the gods. But in revenge for this act, Hera drove Ino’s husband to furious insanity, in which he killed their son and went searching to end Ino’s life as well. To escape such a hateful death, she threw herself into the sea, their baby son in her arms.

In pity, the Olympians transformed her into a goddess and called her Leukothea, white goddess, the queen of the sea who comes to the aid of all sailors that call her name.
